John Neville

john_neville
John was born in 1956 on the east coast of Newfoundland. In 1960 his family moved to
Black Tickle, near Porcupine Bay on the south coast of Labrador. This was the ancestral home of his Metis mother. John has been, as long as he can remember, industrious in the arts of fishing and building. Having carved since he was a youngster, John is one of Labrador's most senior and accomplished sculptors. He began with wood and soon graduated to marble and soapstone. These days, John carves mostly in antler, whalebone, and Labrador's jade-like serpentine. John's themes spring from his life on the rugged and rocky south coast. His preferences for carving include larger stone and bone sculptures of whales and indigenous peoples engaging in daily life at the sea's edge.
